"Food is a right, not a privilege!"
With the steady increase in the cost of living and the challenges around finding work, many students in post secondary institutions are increasingly facing higher food insecurity issues. In 2006 Food for Thought and The Summit Student Church partnered together to start their vision of establishing a Food Pantry for students at Algoma University. The Pantry officially opened its doors in May 2007. Since then the Food Pantry, now student operated, has increased significantly to meet the demands of students for emergency food services and address food insecurity issues on campus and off.
The Algoma University Students’ Union Food Pantry is a collectively-run student service that recognizes the pressing, often hidden causes and consequences of student hunger. We further strive to develop awareness and support within the university community and in the City of Sault Ste Marie.
Our new temporary home from July 2020 until further notice, is located on the Main Campus in The Globe, International Student Lounge, main floor. We offer the same confidential and oppressive-free environment in a larger and better equipped area to serve your food needs.

We will be open Tuesdays 4 - 7PM and Fridays from 12 - 4 pm, where our Interim Food Pantry Coordinator Olivia will be present to assist you.
Due to the ongoing pandemic there have been some changes made to the pantry operations to ensure the safety of our students and community members accessing this service. Please make note of the following changes:
Appointments can be made through our google calendar link
The following changes are required by administration and have not been made lightly. Hopefully this will be short term changes. We appreciate your cooperation and look forward to seeing you! If you have any further questions please email opase@algomau.ca
Due to the ongoing pandemic there have been some changes made to the pantry operations to ensure the safety of our students and community members accessing this service. Please make note of the following changes:
- When you arrive you must knock on the outside of the globe door (located near the front doors of the main building). You will not be allowed inside the pantry.
- Only one student is permitted to come to the appointment and masks must be worn.
- When you make your appointment you need to list allergies, dietary restrictions and if you have any preferred items.
- The pantry will do its best to meet your requests but will not be able to guarantee exact items.
- Food bags will be arranged prior to your arrival so it is very important that you come to the correct time slot and tell the pantry assistant your name so that you do not end up with the wrong bag of food.

Algoma University Student Cookbook
There are many ways in which we can learn about and experience culture first hand, and one of the best ways is through food. Algoma University has such a rich and beautifully diverse community and we want to celebrate it! We have asked students to share with us their favourite recipes and dishes with their fellow students and the Algoma Community, to share with you here on our webpage.
